Linda's Grammar Rap - Jokey way to remember Grammar

5/9/2014

I was chatting with someone the other day about grammar and it reminded me of this little comic way I invented for my own kids so they could remember grammar basics - through hip-hop. They enjoyed it so much – and learnt it so easily - that I taught it to the young students who came to my creative writing classes or were at the schools where I was invited to give talks about my work.  Those children taught others and the whole thing snowballed to the extent that I’ve now heard many hilarious stories of teachers and students enjoying it to the degree that they’ve actually performed it for the whole school – with costumes to match, to the great hilarityof everyone concerned.

It became called ‘Linda’s Grammar Rap’, and now generations of school kids have enjoyed it, and, I’m told, many adults too.

I’m now putting it online so that everyone has the chance to enjoy it as they learn the basics of grammar. I hope you find it useful – and fun.  It probably doesn't have any real place in a blog about screenwriting, but - hey ...

         Linda’s Grammar Rap
Now here’s a little song and it’s all about grammar
And if you don’t like it gonna hit you with a hammer,
‘Cos a hammer is a noun and a noun is a thing.
A verb is what you do, like when you sing.
An adverb’s how you do it, a noun is what it is
To describe a noun -  use an adjective!
Now listen up and settle, I know you think I’m rude
But when it comes to grammar, I got - attitude !
Those words like ‘if’ and ‘and’ and ‘but’,
You need to know their function.
They join up parts of sentences,
they got the name ‘conjunction’.
And words that take the place of nouns like ‘he’ and ‘she’ and ‘it’,
And ‘we’ and ‘us’ and ‘you’ and ‘me’,
they’re pronouns, that’s no sweat
And sister, take some notice of my closing deposition
Those words that tell you where you’re at,
they’re called the prepositions
Like ‘by’ and ‘from’ and ‘up’ and ‘down’ and ‘to’ and ‘in’ and ‘out’
Like real estate, position, bro, is what it’s all about.
So teach yourself some grammar, like your mamma would expect
Cos when it comes to grammar, gotta do it with RESPECT!.
